Boric Acid Catalyzed Amidation
Maybe it is time to forget time-consuming and tedious methods for amide formation. This boric acid catalyzed amidation method seems promising.

Nitrile synthesis by tandem cyanation/alkylation
Metal-mediated alkylations and cyanations are not new but, what about accomplishing both in the same step? A group in Canada shows how to prepare ortho alkyl and aryl nitriles in a one-pot reaction.

Halogenating the gap
Preparation of aryl halides is a key step in many syntheses. But the introduction of an halogen in meta to other substituents is not usually trivial. The key to that reaction is an Iridium catalyst.

Triazoles through Ruthenium
The use of a Ru catalyst allows now the preparation of 1,5-disubstituted triazoles under microwave irradiation. Another useful tool for the medicinal chemists.

New bases for DoM
When talking about Directed ortho Metallations (DoM) most people think about organolithium bases. But the use of Lipshutz-type amidocuprates can change that.

 R&D Work : Microwave assisted aza-Cope rearrangement
Microwaves are one of the most useful tools for the medicinal chemist. Reactions which needed hours can now be carried out in minutes using a microwave reactor. We have developed a new method for the microwave assisted aza-Cope rearrangement of N-allylanilines.

Review of the month : Pd(II) reactions
Everybody knows that Pd(0) is widely used for the formation of C-C, C-O and C-N bonds. However, the use of Palladium(II) is less known, even though many Pd(II)-complex-catalyzed reactions starting from not functionalized, cheap substrates are available. Therefore, we have selected as review of this month "C-C, C-O, C-N Bond Formation on sp2 Carbon by Pd(II)-Catalyzed Reactions Involving Oxidant Agents" by Beccalli et al (Chem. Rev. 2007; 107(11) pp 5318 - 5365). This review covers the full range of Pd(II) couplings and will serve as reminder that very interesting and useful transformations, specially those involving heterocyclic systems, are possible using the humble and faithful Pd(OAc)2.
