| Challenging the C-H |
In 1995 Barry Trost published his well known paper on Atom Economy. His concept can be summarized in a few words: stoichiometry must be exact and no atoms should be wasted. Diels-Alder is the perfect example of such a reaction, since all atoms of starting materials are present in the final product. Most organometallic couplings, quite popular reactions in medicinal chemistry, have a low efficiency in terms of atom economy. Why we need to carry around atoms and groups which we are going to lose in the end?

| Review of the month : Ionic Liquids in Heterocyclic Synthesis |
| Ionic liquids have attracted increasing interest in the context of green organic synthesis, because their physical properties and ability to be reused many times turn them into potential replacements for classic organic solvents. But in the last years the ionic liquids have shown also to play an intriguing role in controlling reactions as solvent or catalyst. The number of published papers increases every year, and since ionic liquids can be applied to literally any reaction, it is not surprising that new synthesis of heterocycles in this reaction media have been described. We have selected for this month the review "Ionic Liquids in Heterocyclic Synthesis" by Martins et al. (Chem. Rev. 2008, 108(6), pp 2015–2050). This review covers specific applications of ionic liquids to the cyclocondensation reactions so familiar for medicinal chemists. |
